33 Elmwood has taken a different approach, devoting as much attention to the restaurant portion of their business as the games – which include candlepin and 10-pin bowling as well as bocce (and cornhole on Thursdays). With executive chef Aaron Mallory (Volt, Central Provisions) making nearly everything – from ricotta to bread, to pickles and pastry – in house, the focus on quality is clear. If you visit, order the Mac pizza and a 33 Burger: Both reclaim and elevate the irresistible flavors of fast-food hamburgers. Mallory, who was a pastry chef at Hugo’s, also produces excellent desserts, like a deconstructed S’mores cake made with heavy Italian meringue and nutty, Graham cracker-like toasted milk powder. Thanks to the equal attention it pays to plating as well as pins, 33 Elmwood feels like a fully realized restaurant that happens to share its space and fun-loving vibe with a bowling alley.
