Too funny: A couple weeks ago on The Tonight Show, host Jimmy Fallon thanked comedian Dave Chappelle for introducing him to the show’s house band, The Roots. Chappelle then told the story of how he was mistaken for a band member in Portland years go when he and the band were both in town.
“Do you remember where you first met The Roots?” Fallon asked.
“Yeah, I was in Portland, Maine. I was walking in the mall and I guess you guys had been there an hour before me, so they just thought I was a lost Root,” Chappelle said.
“In Portland, Maine? Yeah,” Fallon said, laughing.
“You can imagine,” Chappelle said. “A lady comes up and is like ‘can I get your autograph?’ I’m like yeah. I’m signing and she’s like ‘I love the Roots.’ I’m like, ‘The Roots?’ So that’s how I knew they were playing and I went to their show that night. That was the first time I met them.”
So there you go. If you see the (great) band playing on The Tonight Show, know that — in part — it’s thanks to a lady in The Maine Mall who mistook Dave Chappelle for a bandmate.
