Tori Amos: "A Silent Night With You" proves new holiday music can be good

When I think of Christmas music, I think of Ella Fitzgerald, Bing Crosy, Johnny Mathis, Judy Garland, Billie Holiday Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and the like. I also think of a few 80’s gems like The Waitresses “Christmas Wrapping” and The Pogues’ “A Fairytale of New York.”

All of this is to say that “new” good Christmas songs are few and far between. Here’s one example:

Four years ago, Tori Amos released a seasonal album called “Midwinter Graces.”

The album is gorgeous, haunting and everything that a Tori album should be. (read: I worship the ground she walks on). My favorite song on it, and the reason for this post, is called “A Silent Night With You.” Four years later, I am officially declaring this song as a personal holiday favorite. What are some of yours?

Here’s the studio version with lovely strings:

And here’s a live version of the song just because I love Tori:

And here’s a story I wrote about “Midwinter Graces”  back in 2009. It includes an interview with Amos.Yeah!
