11 Songs in the Key of Marriage Equality…History is Made

Written by: Aimsel Ponti

Today is a day that I for one will never forget. The Supreme Court ruled in favor of gay marriage.

First came tears of joy. Then came phone calls from both parents followed by the biggest social media explosion I’ve ever witnessed. In fact as I write this, the glorious aftermath is still unfolding.

Then I put my head down and got back to work. This brought me to lunchtime when my mind wandered where it always does; to music.

What songs best capture the importance, joy and glory of this moment? I bet you can think of a few. Although I can’t bring myself to post Kool and the Gang’s “Celebration” (heard it 2 million times too many) I can’t help but hear it in my head right now.

Here are a few others to document in song, the magnitude of this day in American history.

“Heavenly Day,” Patty Griffin

“These Are Days,” 10,000 Maniacs

“I Believe In Love,” Paula Cole

“Kind and Generous,” Natalie Merchant

“Love and Marriage,” Frank Sinatra

 “Let Love Rule,” Lenny Kravitz

“Same Love,” Macklemore & Ryan Lewis with Mary Lambert

“This is the Day,” The The

 “A Deeper Love,” Aretha Franklin

 ‘Finally,” CeCe Peniston

and lastly…”Hail” by Hamell on Trial ( a song for Matthew Shepard)
