Get your acts together – literally – at Port City party with Spencer Albee & Zach Jones

Spencer Albee and Zach Jones will be joined by a talented mob of local musicians.

There is excitement in the air about huge shows this summer from the likes of Sarah McLachlan, Natalie Merchant, Arcade Fire, Tom Petty, ZZ Top and others. But for now, let’s keep things local … and with good reason.

There’s quite a party brewing this weekend in Portland with a heck of a lot of sensational music. Whether you dig pop, rock, soul, R&B, electronic and many-a-splendored other things under the musical sun, I’ve got the show for you.

Like Tom & Jerry, Abbott and Costello, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, Bo and Luke Duke and even Laverne and Shirley, Zach Jones and Spencer Albee are two friends who were meant to perform together.

Albee and Jones started playing together circa 2002 when Jones joined the band Rocktopus just after the recording of its debut album, “I Love You! Good Morning!” Albee and Jones are both from York and both gents are accomplished musicians with an appreciation for the same kind of music. They were pretty much destined to wind up in the same band.

Rocktopus morphed into As Fast As, and a few years later, Jones worked with Albee again on his “Spencer and the School Spirit Mafia” album before both dove into solo careers. Albee pitched in on Jones’ fantastic “Things Were Better” album and Jones will be on Albee’s forthcoming “Mistakes Were Made.”

This brings us to the Friday night show at Port City Music Hall. Jones will perform a set with his band and Spencer with his. But there’s so much more. School Spirit Mafia will play a short set with Albee and will be joined by As Fast As alum Andrew Hodgkins for a set of songs celebrating the 10th anniversary of AFA’s “Open Letter to the Damned” album.

Still with me? Good, because we’re not done.

An episode of the Web series “Live at the Studio, Portland” will debut, featuring Albee recording a song from start to finish. Cool!

Albee and Jones will be joined on stage throughout the evening by an all-star cast of local luminaries. Expect to see and hear Dominic Lavoie, Chuck Gagne, Sean Morin, McCrae Hathaway, Nathan Cyr, Kate Beever, Kris Rodgers, Chris Sweet, Dan Capaldi, John Maclaine, Jamie Colpoys, Holly Nunan, Kallie Ciechomski and Megan Jo Wilson. I’m already exhausted, but in the best way possible.

The Gang’s All Here: An Evening with Spencer Albee and Zach Jones, 9 p.m. Friday. Port City Music Hall, 504 Congress St., Portland. $10 in advance; $12 day of show; $20 preferred seating; 18-plus;
