My favorite musicians’ favorite love songs for Valentine’s Day

Written by: Aimsel Ponti

“Everlasting Love” by The Love Affair. xoxo

Since Valentine’s Day is Saturday, I’ve been thinking about love songs. The holiday’s chocolate, cards and tacky gifts everywhere can be painfully cliche for those of us on the receiving end of them and just as frown-inducing for those who are single, broken-hearted or crushing on someone.

I reached out to a bunch of my favorite musicians from a variety of genres and asked what their favorite love songs are and why. The results are an eclectic melange of tunes to ponder as you hope to get struck by – or hide from – Cupid’s (pesky) arrow.

“It’s one of the most heart crushing songs ever as far as I’m concerned.”
Song: “I Still Love You” Artist: Anne Heaton
Lyric: “I still love you like a fairytale, a sweet old story…but it isn’t real. And I don’t need you to be a part of it, but it’s a part of me, and I make peace with it.”

“The details in this are great, the passion is immense and that urgent yearning of all great love songs in infused into every chord and word.”
Song: “Falling For You” Artist: Weezer
Lyric: “I’m shaking at your touch, I like you way too much. My baby, I’m afraid I’m falling for you and I’d do about anything to get the hell out alive.”

“My favorite ever love song is of course a dark, obsessive, lyrical masterpiece.”
Song: “La Chanson des vieux amants” (Translation: The Song of Old Lover”) Artist: Jacques Brel
Lyric: “Main mon amor, mon doux, mon tendre, mon merveilleux amor. De l’aube claire jusqu a la fin du jour. Je t’aime encore, tu sais je t’aime. Translation: “But my love, my soft, my tender, my wonderful love, fin the clear light of dawn until the end of the day, I still love you. You know, I love you.”

Song: “Cupid” Artist: Sam Cooke
Lyric: “Cupid, please here my cry, and let your arrow fly. Straight to my lover’s heart for me”

“The song is so pure, so lovely and just gets right to it. Plus, Tuck’s guitar melts my heart.”
