Maine-made clutches inspired by bait bags

Alaina Harris has dabbled in the creative world since she was a young kid. Part business savvy and part artsy, she studied both entrepreneurship and art at USM. She knew she wanted to create a product, but wasn’t sure what it would be. “I learned how to screen print and then started printing my artwork onto t-shirts. It was fun but not something I was passionate about,” she says.
Since Maine is a mecca for inspiration, she found herself being drawn to nautical elements. “I love anything nautical so I started thinking of ways to bring that into a piece that would be practical and useful, yet also sustainable,” she says.  “The brainstorming process was literally a domino effect. I had seen bait bags used in commercial fishing before and really liked the material which has a neat texture, is water-proof, marine-grade, nautical and beachy.” She bought a few and decided to see how it could hold up to screen-printing. After much trial and error with her sewing machine and some scissors, the clutch was born. A durable but super chic piece that’s no where near as stinky as the bait bags you’d find in traps.
