My friend the very talented stylist and fashion blogger Ashley Jordan knows how to make Mom jeans look good. She’s agreed to share her top-secret styling secrets with us. Take it away, Ashley!
The “Mom Jean”. You may know it as something, well, your mom wore. It started as a thrift shop find (those may be the actual jeans your mom wore) and now has turned into one of the new denim styles this season. Just like with the skinny jean or boyfriend jean, there were skeptics. New trends are sometimes hard to get into first. I am here to show you just how great these will be added to your wardrobe.
Mom jeans are the perfect combination of a high waisted jeans and a boyfriend jean. The high waist is flattering because it lands at your natural waist (the smallest part of you!) and accentuates your curves and booty. With the tapered leg, it gives a loose and slouchy leg like a boyfriend jean. This means it is comfortable!
While there are new pairs you can buy in stores, one of the best parts about these is that you can find them at any thrift store. Spending under $10 is amazing, but it may come with a little work. Finding the perfect fit may be a bit harder and you may have to tailor them, but for people like me, it is worth the work. For those who are not interested in searching thrift stores for them, a few of my favorite ones are Levi’s 50s, Urban Outfitters The Mom Jean, and Topshop Moto Blues Jeans.
There are lots of way to wear mom jeans. Since the waist is pretty high, you are able to wear cropped tops or sheer shirts with a bra top under them without showing off more skin than you are comfortable with. The slouchy fit makes outfits look cool and effortless. Try them with a white button down partially tucked in. Or any top, from a white tee to a buttoned-all-the-way-up blouse, look great tucked in. Unless the pants are pretty slim at the ankle, the best thing to do is to cuff the jeans. They look better at an ankle length and this will help show off your shoes! And remember, this jean style is coming straight from the 90s, which is another huge trend, so have fun with it. Get nostalgic. Wear something you loved growing up now in an adult version.
