Form meets function in repurposed bags by Jared DeSimio

Form and function: two of my favorite personality traits of a really good bag. Jared DeSimio is a Belfast, Maine native and creates bags from repurposed fabrics with a utilitarian edge. I first spotted his booth at Picnic and couldn’t stop thinking about his designs.

DeSimio currently lives in Brunswick with his family and though his collection of bags are well-crafted, his background lies in Video Production. “I’ve always been creative, but I don’t have a formal education,” he explains. “I learn a lot from trying stuff out and watching other people.”

He’s been sewing and designing his bags for four years while fine-tuning his aesthetic and technique. Each bag he designs looks like it has a story sewn in, created from fabrics found from flea markets, yard sales or auctions. The character of the fabric he finds often dictates what bag he’ll create from it. The location or writing is often front and center.

DeSimio’s rucksacks are some of his most inspired pieces. He took design cues from a vintage, homemade piece that was a gift from his Mother-in-Law. “The design on it is very DIY, resourceful and utilitarian.” The same buzz words that can be said for his designs as well.

Shop his full collection in his etsy shop and check him out on twitter and facebook too!
