Portland’s most fashionable workplaces: Head Games

Written by: Shannon Bryan

At the corner of Free and Oak Streets in Portland, there’s an even flow of well-pampered, freshly pedicured, and expertly styled locals coming out of Head Games Salon for Hair and Body. And those are just the customers. Inside the bright, modern, eco-friendly salon, the professional stylists, estheticians, nail techs, spa managers, and Reiki masters showcase their own unique styles, from side-swept bangs and classic updos to bright stripes, detailed nails, pinecone pendants, and open-backed dresses that hint of summer. It’s feminine edge at its finest.

Alanna York

Hailing from: Falmouth
Her style: I’m a big fan of comfortable and sexy boho-chic looks. I can’t wait for warmer weather to break out my collection of maxi-dresses (or daygowns as I call them;)
Where she shops: Bliss (Portland) for jeans. I travel a lot for work, so I like to pick up some different/unique pieces when I’m in NYC or Chicago. Banana Republic is usually good, too.
Favorite fashion find: Stuart Weitzman pumps. They were one of my “splurge” items. They are classic and always make me feel extra-sophitisexy!

Kate Emmerich

Senior Stylist and Director of Education
Hailing from: Williamsburg, MA, now living on Munjoy Hill 🙂
Her style: I love fashion, but I can be kind of pussy when it comes to actually wearing things. For this reason, my closet is full, but I wear about 10% of the clothes in it. I love color – the brighter the better – but I try to tone down a loud item with some neutral counterparts. I’m short, so I am always wearing heels, but because I am on my feet for 11 hours a day I am uber picky with my heel choices. Chunky and wedgy work best. This girl’s gotta have 3-4 inches. I covet big earrings and big necklaces. The bigger the better. And I have an expensive jean fetish. I love to work out and do yoga so I also know to rock my Lulu Lemon yoga leggings regularly. What can I say, no other legging makes one’s butt look that good. I can’t resist. And I may speak for all of us here, but the MOST integral element of fashion is impeccable hair and makeup.
Where she shops: Because of said expensive jean fetish, I adore Bliss (Portland). My butt loves Lululemon. Urban Outfitters, but I feel like a little bit of a poser-hipster when I’m in there.
Favorite fashion find:My grandmother gave me a fabulous, cream clutch from the 50s that I love and that goes with everything. Its got a great snap closure and is covered in those little tiny plastic balls that look like candy.

Jill Lopez

Hailing from: Denver, CO, currently living in Portland
Her style: MODEST, feminine, thrifty, inspired by vintage in a neutral, earthy palette, with simple clean lines, and a touch of drama.
I feel like I’ve captured my personal style in the last 2 years of living in New England, I am very inspired by the old and antique, but bringing it forth in a new and modern way. Timelessness is always on the forefront of my mind when shopping for staple items.
Where she shops: H&M, Urban Outfitters, Etsy, Material Objects (Portland)
Favorite fashion find: My favorite fashion find is a pair of tortoise shell wayfarer glasses from Fabulous Fanny’sin New York.

Christina Flannery

Hailing from: Westbrook
Her style: Wear pieces that make you feel comfortable and confident. Knowing the right fit and cuts that work best for your body is really important. I like a classic minimalist style with a feminine twist.
Where she shops: J.Crew, Anthropolgie, Nordstrom
Favorite fashion find:Right now for spring I love colorful jeweled necklaces. Adds a pop of color to a simple outfit.

Sally Mosen

Hailing from: Cape Porpoise, ME, now living in Portland
Her style: Colorful, fresh and modern, kitschy casual, inspired by the seacoast.
Where she shops: Urban Outfitters, Moody Lords (Portland), and American Apparel
Favorite fashion find: My pine cone necklace from Daytrip Society(Kennebunkport). It goes with everything and shows my love for Maine <3

Vanessa Cavallaro

Nail Tech/Esthetician
Hailing from: Portland
Her style: Being a mother of two I like to wear things that are still sexy but tasteful. I like to embrace my curves and can often be found wearing dresses and fun pieces to be playful.
Where she shops: I shop most often at the Express, T.J.Maxx, and H&M
Favorite fashion find: My favorite find is my whiskey leather Coach bucket bag. I love it and it’s a classic piece I can use year-round. It’s big enough to hold all my essentials plus the random super heroes, matchboxes, and snacks that find their way in along my travels!!

Maureen “Mau Love” Emerson

Senior Stylist, Dr. Hauschka Esthetician, Barber, Reiki Master, Spa Manager
Hailing from: Portland
Her style: I believe being practical, creative and sassy are key to my personal style. I think it’s fun to bounce around with trends, but maintain your own character since trends recycle. I look up the color of the day from the zodiac to add a quick yet creative twist on my daily outfit.
Where she shops: Material Objects (Portland), Arcana (Portland), Marshalls
Favorite fashion find: Two things…10 Sparkly black Toms that I wear in the spa. 2) Raw, gold detailed citrine crystal pendants from Arcana. I love accessories with energy.

Holly Germann

Director of Operations
Hailing from: Portland
Her style: I am a big believer that you can be super comfortable without sacrificing on style. I love neutrals paired with bright colors, basic pieces paired with one bold statement piece or funky jewelry, interesting color combinations and layering. Layering adds more visual interest to an otherwise plain look, not to mention you can adapt to the temperature. I also gravitate towards looks that have both strong feminine and masculine aspects.
Where she shops: Anywhere and everywhere, department stores to thrift stores… love Etsy, Pinecone & Chickadee (Portland), and Ferdinand (Portland) for jewelry and accessories. Love a bargain as a get a bit of a rush when I’ve found a great deal!
Favorite fashion find: I have a beautiful Hobo bag I found on clearance at T.J.Maxxyears ago that I am obsessed with. It is made from a bright peachy-orangey leather, otherwise very simple. I know it doesn’t sound like it would match everything but for some reason it does, not to mention is has tons of compartments for all my stuff. I’ll probably be toting that thing around 50 years from now!

Lauren Weeks

Professional Hair Stylist
Hailing from: Raymond, Maine
Statement on style: I would describe my personal style as fun, stylish, and colorful. I like to be comfy but look professional at the same time. I like to express my individuality through clothes. My thoughts on fashion and style is wear what is comfortable for you and that describes you. Try new styles and trends that come out every season. Don’t be afraid to hide your curves. Show them off.
Where she shops: My three favorite stores to shop at are Express, Charlotte Russe, and T.J.Maxx.
Favorite fashion find: I love animal print and love to dress it up by adding a belt and a cute pair of boots or heels. I found my shirt on the clearance rack at Express along with the jeans. Very affordable.
