What are the best diners in Maine?

Written by: Susan Axelrod

Clockwise from top: A waitress at Moody’s; the Brunswick Diner — both photos by Ted Axelrod; inside the Maine Diner in Wells; the Miss Portland Diner —both photos, Press Herald file

In yet another list featuring great food in Maine (not that we’re complaining, not at all …) Food & Wine magazine called out three Maine diners in its recent round-up of America’s Best Diners.

Those that made the list should come as no surprise to anyone who lives here: Becky’s Diner in Portland; Moody’s Diner in Waldoboro; A-1 Diner in Gardiner.

But we know there are plenty of other noteworthy diners in Maine that haven’t had national recognition or a visit from Guy Fieri and his red Corvette. These cozy, welcoming places serve up endless cups of hot coffee, pancakes, fish chowder, meatloaf and pie, without fuss or fanfare, to steady crowds of regular customers, Mainers who grab their usual stool or booth and tuck into their favorite hearty comfort foods.

There may be one of these fine establishments in your town or somewhere else in Maine that’s worth the drive. Please let us know so we can give your favorite diner the kudos it deserves.
