Robust beer, cocktail menu and great happy hour vibe at Petrillo’s in Freeport

Petrillo's n Freeport

The margarita ($9) is concocted with house-made sour, Hornitos Repsado, Cointreau and your choice of flavor: traditional, strawberry, peach, pomegranate, melon, raspberry, apple or Italian. At right: Petrillo’s is a beacon on Depot Street in Freeport. Photos by Claire Jeffers

You’ve probably passed by Petrillo’s in Freeport a dozen times while searching for a parking spot or heading to the movie theater across the street. Housed in a red barn-style building with an enclosed side patio, Petrillo’s may look like just another mediocre eatery for harried shoppers. But, while it does host the shopping crowd seven days a week, Petrillo’s is a favorite among Freeport residents for its happy hour, award-winning pizza, homemade meatballs and welcoming atmosphere.

The only potential downside to Petrillo’s is space, so leave shopping bags in the car if possible and expect a small wait on weekend nights. The bar takes up the majority of the restaurant with about 20 seats, including some counter seating, with a smattering of two- and four-tops in the heated patio section and a few tables along the wall. But the close quarters actually make for a cozy, sociable ambiance that encourages patrons to bump elbows, chat and eat. The servers are long-time professionals who get you seated and served as fast as possible. Even when you think they don’t see you, they do.

Happy hour is Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. featuring $3 beers and glasses of house wine and appetizer specials. Petrillo’s boasts local craft beers, such as Rising Tide, Baxter, Maine Beer Co. and Moat Mountain, and a stealthy list of bottled beer including several Allagash varieties, seasonals, and Not Your Father’s Root Beer. The wine list is made up of mostly big box store wines, but there’s enough assortment to find something decent for $4-$7.50 a glass (bottles also available).

While Petrillo’s seems to be more of a beer and pizza crowd, there are eight cocktails to choose from, some of which are made with house mixes, like the house limoncello, and various choices (strawberry, peach, apple) for your margarita.

This place should be at the top of your shopping list the next time you’re in Freeport. Whether you’re taking a break or unwinding from a day at Bean’s, or perhaps avoiding the shopping mob altogether, Petrillo’s will make you feel right at home.
