Say it, Eat it: Gyro

Written by: Shannon Bryan

Gyro [yeer-oh]

Meat roasted on a vertical spit. The Greek sandwich is typically served with tomatoes, onions, French fries, and sauce and is wrapped in pita. It’s also often pronounced “jai-roh” around here, but either way you order it, you’ll get the right sandwich.

Hear it:

Eat it:

  • Get your gyro at Whaddapita, once it reopens in South Portland
  • Traditional gyros on the go at The Greek Corner, Portland
  • Emilitsa serves a gyro comprised of spit-roasted ground lamb and beef wrapped in grilled pita with tomato, bermuda onion, and tzatziki
