Catbird Creamery and the Frog & Turtle seem to be the two most common mentions when you ask people where to go in Westbrook. But the next time you make the short trek to the ‘Brook, Fajita Grill (“Fajitas Grill,” according to its Facebook page) is another place to consider.
Whatever you call it, the spacious Mexican eatery delivers authentic fare and sizable margaritas seven days a week, plus great specials. For example, on Tuesdays wings are 49 cents and draft beers are $1.50. Other specials include margaritas for $5.99 on Wednesdays and only $4 on Fridays.
From the outside, Fajita Grill looks tired and tacky, but once inside, the friendly and swift service helps the kitschy décor feel almost charming. And the food is surprisingly good. Chips and salsa seem bottomless and are served within minutes of sitting down. The house margarita is large, but if you order the “Gold” margarita ($14, with top-shelf tequila), your drink will be roughly the size of a fish bowl.
The other mixed drinks (nine) aren’t anything special unless you’re in the mood for an Allen’s Coffee Brandy and milk or sweet tea, vodka and pink lemonade.
Fajita Grill’s bar area is lively most nights, with plenty of seating, several TVs and lots of standing room if bar seats are taken. The lighting at the bar (and the whole place) is a little glaring, but this isn’t the type of place you go for mood lighting anyway.
In the neighborhood for the last eight years, Fajita Grill recently changed owners after the original owners were convicted of harboring undocumented workers, as reported in the Portland Press Herald. For now, that all seems to be in the past and Fajita Grill is up and running as a popular place for decent food and cheap drinks.
