Written by: Holly Nunan

Nothing makes me smile wider than knowing that we’ve made it all the way to Thursday! Of course Thursday isn’t as grand as say, Friday, but it’s still pretty frickin’ delightful in its own right. If you’ve got a hankering to celebrate this evening, here are some fine establishments and shows to check out. Let’s Thursday!

Power-pop piano man Kris Rodgers will be teaming up with the lovely and talented Lindsey Clancy for a night of great music at The Dancing Elephant on Main Street in Westbrook this evening. Beginning at 6 join the duo for some delicious food paired with some tasty tunes at this free, all-age show.

Kick up your heels and have some fun this Thursday evening with the Blasted Knoll String Band as the act plays a free event showcasing their blend of original, acoustic bluegrass and Americana tunes at Andy’s Old Port Pub on Commercial Street starting at 6 o’clock.

Brian Boru will be getting merry and bright tonight with a throwback holiday party featuring the sounds of The RPM, a band comprised of some Portland’s finest musicians such as Adam Agati, James Donahue, Merissa Barry, Adam Frederick, Nicholas Falk and tons of special guests, playing favorites from Chubby Checker, Elvis Presley, Ray Charles and more. The party gets underway at 7 with appetizers and drink specials and things get shaking upstairs with some free tunes right around 9:30pm.

The Q Morning Show is turning up the volume on your holiday season with their Not So Silent Night concert at the State Theatre in Portland tonight. Pop duo MKTO will perform alongside American Idol 2014’s 3rd place finalist Alex Preston and Portland’s own Maine Youth Rock Orchestra who’ll be jamming out awesome string versions of Fall Out Boy, Maroon 5, Pharrell Williams, Imagine Dragons and much more. Your Favorite Homie JR will be spinning tunes between sets and your hosts for the evening will be The Q’s Meredith, Jeff and Lori. Don’t miss this all-ages event that is guaranteed to be merry and bright as things get underway at 7 o’clock.

Local artist Lisa Redfern will be performing a blend of folk, bluegrass, country, gospel, blues, and swing to create something unmistakably her own alongside bassist Wendy Cody at Blue on Congress Street in Portland tonight. The pair takes the stage starting right around 7pm.

If you’re hitting the slopes this weekend and find yourself up at Sugarloaf, be sure to check out local country-rock duo Pitch Black Ribbons at The Rack tonight. The brothers will be bringing their toe-tapping tunes to the stage starting right around 7 o’clock.

If you’re Thursdaying up in Waterville be sure to check out a free show from local roots rocker Travis James Humphrey as he plays a solo set starting at 8 o’clock at the Silver Street Tavern.

Flying Lion Productions and Geno’s Rock Club on Congress Street in Portland present FLYLi Thursday with some heavy-hitting, inventive hip-hop acts such as Caro Khan, Twins of Aries, and Tranx tonight. Things get popping off at 9 o’clock, so roll through and check things out if you’re looking to bob your head this Thursday evening.

Brooklyn-based, electrified, honky-tonk surf duo, Crushed Out bring their rock n’ roll dance party to Flask Lounge on Spring Street in Portland tonight where they’ll be joined by special guest Kyle Morgan of Tumbling Bones for a great night of free music as things get shakin’ right around 9 o’clock.

I’m excited to check out the happenings over at Empire on Congress Street in Portland tonight. I don’t have to wake up at the ass crack of dawn tomorrow and I have the day off from my big girl job so I plan on properly rocking and rolling with the fellas in Whale Oil as they present an epic night of tuneage that’ll feature a ton of special guests. Starting at 9:30, Whale Oil will be rocking alongside their Boston pals, Latch as well as Jeff Beam’s All Star Game, which features a rotating cast of some of Portland’s finest players. I expect an all out rock n’ roll throw down with a ton of twists, turns and surprises this Thursday, so get there early and hang out late so you don’t miss any of the good stuff!

Down at Gritty’s on Fore Street in the Old Port you can check out the fellas in Vinyl Tap as they throw a big old dance party covering songs from such acts as Huey Lewis, Sir Elton, Charlie Daniels, The Beatles and so many more. There’s never, ever a cover charge and plenty of beer, so there’s really no excuse not to check things out as the music starts right around 10 o’clock.
