Written by: Holly Nunan

Happy Birthday, America! Before we get down to the nitty gritty of partying, fireworks, barbecues, friends and general summer debauchery I’d just like to take a moment to thank everyone that continues to serve, or has served our country, to keep it free and give us the opportunity to celebrate on days like today. That being said hope you’re stocked up on red hot dogs and Bud Heavies and are ready to party patriotically this Fourth of July! (Also, because Mother Nature has a slightly bad attitude today, please check ahead before heading out to any of this awesome outdoor shows to see if they’ve been moved to an alternate date or venue!)

Local musician Ryan Halliburton is pulling double duty on this wondrous holiday by playing not one, but two gigs at the Portland Lobster Company on Commercial Street in Portland. Your first chance to hang out with Ryan is at noon as he performs a solo set of songs and then again at 5 o’clock as he and the band The Still combine musical forces for an evening of good times, good tunes and good people.

Just down the street a bit at The Porthole you can check out local act Northern Groove as they gear up to play out on the deck this Friday afternoon. This band promises a little bit of something for everyone as they span genres such as blues, classic rock, contemporary, country, R&B and more. The party starts at 3 o’clock.

The Cayden’s Call Trio will be rockin’ it out on the patio down t The Sunset Bar & Grill in Old Orchard Beach this afternoon. The deck will fill up with some rock, blues and pop as the fellas play loads of covers by artists such at Bruno Mars, Eagles, Tom Petty, Sugar Ray, Fast Ball, Clapton, JJ Cale, John Hiatt, Tal Bachman, Santana and more starting right around 4 o’clock.

10322801_555875977861969_7197507858932643630_nKurier, the newest and loveliest little shop on Congress Street in portland that features all handcrafted leather handbags and accessories, welcomes local psych-rockers ShaShaSha into their shop for an evening of First Friday music. This event is free, all ages and guaranteed to be a great stop on your way out to the fireworks or dinner this 4th, so swing through and enjoy some music and maybe even buy yourself something nice as things get underway at 5 o’clock.

Celebrate the work of our fore fathers by busting a move down at Flask Lounge in Portland where DJ Jamie O’Sullivan will be hosting his monthly LOVE dance party event. LOVE features O’Sullivan and special guests Mr. Dereloid, Fletch Dee aka Moses and POPGIRL23 bringing you some of the best house, techno and disco music around for you to properly shake your can to. Not only that, but tonight’s free event is longer than usual with a 6 o’clock start as well as food and drink specials.

Lorraine Bohland and Terry Foster team up tonight to bring some jazz, blues and R&B classics to Fourth of July as they perform a free, live set at Solo Bistro in Bath beginning at 6:30.

Four-piece rock n’ roll act Riot Act will be supplying the party music for your Fourth of July with a show down at Mr. Goodbars in Old Orchard Beach. Bust a move as things get crankin’ right around 7 o’clock.

Local songstress Brooke LaChance has joined forces with a few of her talented friends to create the high-energy funk/dance band Sonic Nova.
