Sweet, wonderful, Wednesday! What is up!? I am overjoyed to see you once again as your arrival marks the half way point to the freakin’ weekend! If you’re all just as happy as myself to have made it this far, then get out on the town to celebrate this joyous occasion! Here we go!
Will Mallett, one of the primary singers and songwriters of local alt-country act The Mallett Brothers Band, will be performing a special solo performance outside on the deck of the Portland Lobster Company on Commercial Street in Portland tonight. Starting at 6 take in some of Will’s original music as well as some covers from some of his favorite Americana, folk and country songwriters at this evening’s free, all ages show.
The Mill Creek Park Summer Concert Series continues this Wednesday over in South Portland as Caroline Cotter and The Portland Swing Trio take to the gazebo stage for an early evening performance. Caroline is an award-winning songwriter with a captivating soprano voice who’ll be joined by two members of Portland’s own bluegrass band, Tricky Britches, to form the Portland Swing Trio. The act will serve up some enjoyable classical jazz and swing tunes at this free, all ages event, which gets swinging (see what I did there?) right around 6:30 this evening.
If you find yourself attracted to such things as electric guitars, organ sounds, and everyone in a band singing together in harmony, then you’ll probably dig tonight’s show down in Prescott Park in Portsmouth. Tonight Indiana’s Houndmouth returns to New England to play some tunes and probably turn a few heads. The act has opened for the likes of the Drive-By Truckers, the Lumineers, the Alabama Shakes, Lucero, and Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, just to name a few. This evening’s all ages, outdoor event has a suggested $8-$10 donation and will get started right around 7 o’clock.
Get down to El Rayo in Portland where classic Cuban music makers, Primo Cubano, will be playing their weekly gig out on the patio. Tonight’s show gets fired up right around 7 o’clock is guaranteed to be a good way to enjoy some delicious Mexican fare and lively Cuban music on a Wednesday evening.
The Sunset Folk Series continues this Wednesday with a special solo set courtesy of Roy Davis of local bluegrass/roots/Americana outfit The Coloradas. Roy will be playing an acoustic set of his indie folk tunes at tonight’s free, all ages event on the Western Prom in Portland starting at 7:45pm.
Get your fill of down home, acoustic roots tunes over at Andy’s Old Port Pub on Commercial Street in downtown Portland where local act David Beam and The Custom House Gang will be playing a free, fun show starting right around 8 o’clock this Wednesday.
Frontier in Brunswick’s Live in the Lounge free music series continues this Wednesday as they welcome back The Lonesome Travelers for an evening of entertainment that gets underway at 8.The Lonesome Travelers is an instrumental trio led by guitarist Peter Herman. The act performs interpretations of songs from many artists such as Willie Nelson, Thelonious Monk, Hank Williams, the Beatles, and more. This show is absolutely free, so swing through if you’re in the area this evening.
Over at Bull Feeney’s in the Old Port check out the return of the Squid Jiggers to the stage as the duo services up some of their unique folk music that pairs well with some ice cold beers. Things get underway right around 8 at this free and fun event.
It’s the fourth Wednesday of the month, which means it’s time for you to head down to The Frog and Turtle on Main Street in Westbrook to check out local rockabilly extraordinaire Pete Witham as he hosts another free open mic night. Starting at 8 you can sign up to play some tunes as well as check out Pete and his pals as they perform throughout the course of the evening. There’s never a cover charge, so hang out and enjoy some good times, tunes and people tonight!
Rap Night at The Asylum in Portland will be highlighting some local hip-hop with another installment of their midweek party hosted by ill by instinct and El Shupacabra tonight. Each and every Wednesday night these fells team up to host this epic Wednesday night ruckus featuring some of the best and brightest rappers, producers and DJs around. Things get started at 9 with early and late night open mic cyphers and as always, ladies get in free, so stop through and check it out!
The Shakes, a 7-piece funk, rock and reggae collective from Hallowell that features some of the local music scene’s most ferociously funky players, will be live at Mine Oyster in Boothbay Harbor tonight for a free midweek party that gets started right around 9 o’clock.
Roots rocker Joe Fletcher brings his country caravan south of Portland tonight for a live show at the Press Room in Porstmouth, NH. Fletcher and his soulful country counterparts and tour mates, Andrew Combs as well as Ron Gallo & the Hang Ten and a Half Band will be joined by local singer-songwriter Caroline Rose for a night of musical revelry that gets underway right around 9 o’clock.
Oh yes! A Nunz era Clash of the Titans will be happening upstairs at the Empire in Portland this evening as two heavy-hitting classic rockers go head-to-head for this week’s competition. Starting at 9:30 Fly like an Eagle on a Jet Airliner and Take a Look Around. Bring a Woman, bring a man, watch the show and see who will Take the Money and Run, or simply Walk Away as Steve Miller dukes it out against Joe Walsh. This’ll be a fun one for sure and I will be there hootin’ and hollerin’ and generally feeling like I’m finally living in the correct musical era, stop through and have some fun this Wednesday!
