The Smiths take on R.E.M. at this week’s Clash of the Titans at Empire

Written by: Holly Nunan

We’re half way to the freakin’ weekend, my babies! That is true cause for some serious celebrating — and good thing because there’s a ton of awesome things to check out tonight! Saddle up and get buck wild this Wednesday, yeehaw! (Yup, that happened…)

Local bluegrass duo Darlin’ Corey will be serving up some good times and good tunes this Wednesday at Gather in Yarmouth. Starting at 6:30 you can check out the pair’s delightful blend of vocal harmonies accompanied by fiddle, banjo, mandolin and guitars as they create a unique version of bluegrass, old time, folk and original songs. Gather also serves some tasty, Maine made food, so hunker down and have some fun at tonight’s free show.

Maine musician and all around nice dude, Dave Jacquet resumes his role as host for this week’s free open mic night at Cole Farms in Gray. Starting at 7:30 any and all musicians are welcome to join in on the fun with Dave and a few of his friends live on stage this Wednesday.

Over at Bull Feeney’s on Fore Street in the Old Port you can check out another fun evening of folk tunes with local act the Squid Jiggers. This dynamic duo of Maine musicians will be creating sounds that pair perfectly with an ice cold pint of beer, so swing through and check ‘em out if you’re in the downtown area this Wednesday evening.

The Squid Jiggers, Dave Rowe and Troy R. Bennett,

Some more open mic action will be happening at the Frog and Turtle on Main Street in Westbrook as local rockabilly musician, Pete Witham hosts another free and fun open mic event. Beginning at 8 you can sign up to play some tunes as well as check out Pete and his pals as they perform throughout the evening.

Frontier in Brunswick’s free music series, Live in the Lounge, continues this Wednesday with some tunes courtesy of local experimental jazz trio, PigBee. The saxophone/guitar/drum trio will be interpreting the jazz music from the 50’s and 60’s, the Beatles, and their own original compositions beginning at 8 o’clock tonight.

Unwind a bit this Wednesday with some down home, acoustic roots tunes courtesy of David Beam and the Custom House Gang as the fellas play a free show at Andy’s Old Port Pub on Commercial Street in the Old Port tonight. This talented troupe will be playing some great music starting right around 8.

Ani DiFranco returns to Maine for a stirring performance at the Waterville Opera House tonight.  After 20 years in the music biz, self-described “Little Folksinger” Ani DiFranco is still technically little, although her influence on fellow musicians, activists, and indie-minded people the world over has been huge. Check out DiFranco’s live show as she takes to the stage right around 8 o’clock this Wednesday.

Birmingham, Alabama crooner Matthew Connor will be performing a Flask Lounge in Portland tonight. Connor’s sound is built on thoughtful, classical theory powered by emotive lyrics and his booming baritone. Connor’s music has been likened to a blend of modern artists such as Portishead and Daughn Gibson as well as legends like Elvis and Sinatra. Maine-based folk artist Jesse Pilgrim will open things up with a fun solo set as tonight’s shindig gets shaking right around 9.

Rap Night over at The Asylum in Portland will be highlighting some local hip-hop with another installment of their midweek party presented by ill by instinct and El Shupacabra. Each and every Wednesday these dudes team up to host this epic night of rap that features some of the best and brightest emcees, producers and DJs around. Things get started at 9 with early and late night open mic cyphers, and as always, ladies get in free, so stop through and check it out!

The Clash of the Titans travels back in time to the 1980s to bring you some of the most influential, emotionally-charged rock from that decade as R.E.M. and The Smiths go song for song during this week’s battle of the cover bands upstairs at Empire in Portland. Anticipate lots of minor keys, jangly guitars, and quintessential 80s college rock hits as things get underway right around 9:30 tonight.
