Sparks The Rescue returns to Port City Music Hall alongside special guests The Sophomore Beat, Mike Naran & The Minus Scale

Happy First Friday of 2015! There’s a whole slew of cool things happening in and around town so pull up those Party Pants and get ready to do it to it this evening. Here we go!

This evening join Erica Haywood of post-punk, garage rock, surf act, The Mad Mulligans and Brent Laflin of eclectic folk-pop-rock act The Achords for an evening of solo acoustic tunes as they pair perform a free, all-ages show starting at 6 at The Homestead Kitchen Bar and Bakery in Farmington.


Charlamagne’s in Augusta welcomes back talented sisters, The Veayo Twins for a free, all-ages show this Friday. Beginning at 7 stop on by and check out the girls’ unique take on their own original tunes, which span genres such as country, pop, rock, jazz and more.


26 Poland Street presents an evening of unique folk music this Friday evening with three terrific acts who’ll begin performing right around 7 o’clock. Tonight check out the outsider folk music of Massachusetts act Mallory alongside the chamber-folk, Americana duo, Thorn & Shout as well as Portland’s own player of melancholic ballads Greg Jamie. This evening’s event is all ages with a suggested donation between $3 and $10.


If you’re in southern Maine area tonight, get the party started with some modern country that’s got just a little bit of southern rock edge as Bad Penny performs at the Wolves Club in Sanford. Tonight’s shindig gets shaking right around 8 o’clock.


It’s the first Friday of the month, which means that Black Cat Road will be back at the Frog and Turtle in Westbrook bringing their good times and good tunes filled with funky, soulful, and rootsy blues tunes to tonight’s free, all-ages event starting right around 8 o’clock.


St. Lawrence Arts hosts local roots rocker Matt Newberg tonight in celebration of his latest release, Green Grass and Blue Sky. Tonight’s performance gets underway at 8 o’clock with a 30-minute solo acoustic set of the new album in its entirety by Newberg followed by he and his band, Love to Burn, performing a full, plugged-in set of tunes.


If you’re downtown this evening, be sure to take in tonight’s performance by Okbari Middle Eastern Ensemble at Blue on Congress Street. Starting at 8 the act will be performing an evening of  music from the Middle East and Turkey on such unique and beautiful instruments as oud (fretless Middle Eastern lute), qanun (72-stringed Middle Eastern micro-tonal zither), nay (ancient Middle Eastern reed flute), and Middle Eastern percussion.


Boston singer-songwriter Kristen Ford will be making a stop in Portland as part of her 2015 winter tour. Tonight you can catch a free set at Andy’s Old Port Pub on Commercial Street as things get underway at 8 o’clock.


Portland pop-rockers Sparks The Rescue return to the stage of Port City Music Hall in Portland with their original member line-up for a show that is guaranteed to kick-start your weekend. Party like it’s 2007 as the fellas are joined by special guests The Minus Scale, The Sophomore Beat and former STR member, Mike Naran. Things get cranking along right around 8 o’clock at this all-ages event.


Maine-based bluegrass band Back Woods Road return to Guthries in Lewiston this Friday with an energetic set of acoustic tunes. Check out Back Woods Road’s tight harmonies, hard driving lead solos, and crowd-pleasing tunes as things get underway at 8pm during tonight’s free show.


The Dogfish Bar & Grille on Free Street in Portland welcomes back local cover act The Waiters as this 5-piece band serves us some quality tunes to ease you on into the first weekend of 2015. This free, all-ages event gets underway right around 8 o’clock.


Sam Shain and The Scolded Dogs return to Easy Street Lounge in Hallowell tonight with their excellent blend of original songs as well as classic covers. Starting at 9 you can expect to hear some awesome originals as well as covers of such acts like Johnny Cash, Parliament, Snoop Dogg and more.


Welcome the brand new year by busting a move out on the dance floor tonight at Flask Lounge in Portland. DJ Jamie O’Sullivan is back to host his monthly LOVE event which features some of the very best house, techno and disco to shake your can to. Things get shaking right around 9pm at this free dance party.


Sly-Chi will be partying in the Old Port tonight as they bring the funk all night long upstairs at Brian Boru. Sly-Chi will be getting your hips shaking with their awesome blend of jazz and funk as things get started around 9:30 at tonight’s free, 21+ show.


There is never a time when it is not a good idea to get the Led out. Tonight you should plan on doing just that by heading down to Empire in Portland for Whole Lotte Love: a tribute to the one and only Led Zeppelin. Starting at 9:30 tons of local placers such as Jya Marie, Scott Girouard, Jon Blake, Jason Ingalls, Sam Conlogue and a slew of special guests will be taking to the stage to perform their own unique renditions of one of the most revered rock n’ roll bands of all time. With 25+ songs on deck, this is guaranteed to be a good time for any Zep fan, so check it out!


Things get funky at Bull Feeney’s in the Old Port tonight with local act Shut Down Brown who promise to keep you dancing the night away with their blends of progressive-rock, funk, and soul upstairs starting at 9:30.


The Evan King Group will be laying down some smooth jazz and funky soul this First Friday at Blue on Congress Street in Portland. Grab a drink and have some fun as the band gets started at 10 o’clock.
