Paranoid Social Club & Jeff Beam rock Empire in Portland tonight

Rabbit, rabbit! Happy First Friday, y’all! It’s time to step up and step out as Friday offers up a whole slew of terrifically awesome sights and sounds. Slip into your favorite pair of Party Jorts and let’s do it to it! 

Get your First Friday evening off to a great start with some musical merriment over at the Dogfish Bar & Grille on Free Street in Portland as local singer-songwriter Isaiah Bennett returns to perform a set of his unique blend of acoustic pop, soul and funk. The party starts at 5 o’clock at this free, all ages shindig.

Another rad rock n’ roll show will be taking over Mathew’s on Free Street this Friday as a handful of bands rock out both upstairs on the deck and downstairs in the venue’s back room as Mathew’s Fest makes a triumphant return tonight. Starting at 5 check out some spirited sets from such acts as Khleb, Swampwater, Mouth Washington, GYM SHORTS, Angelpain, Allele and Wildcat!

Stesha Cano and her talented band mates will be performing live at 4Points BBQ & Blues House in Winterport this Friday. Starting at 6 you can check out this free, all ages show that’ll feature Stesha’s original blues and jazz jams.

Phish cover act Pardon Me, Doug is ready to climb aboard the Harbor Princess in Boothbay Harbor tonight for a wicked fun music cruise that sets sail right around 6 o’clock. The band will be funking it up with their renditions of Phish classics for three hours out on beautiful Boothbay Harbor.

Ellsworth’s Waterfront Concert Series continues tonight with a free, all ages show out at Union River Harbor Park with rockabilly act The Crown Vics. The fellas get the good times going right around 6:30 this Friday.

If you’re up in the Lewiston area this evening you can check out singer-songwriter Ron Bergeron as he performs a free show up at Pedro O’Hara’s.  Ron will be getting your Friday evening kicked into gear with tons of tunes including covers of The Beatles, Stones, Queen, Elvis, The Boss, Tom Petty, Paul Simon and maybe even a little Lady Gaga starting at 7 o’clock.

If you’re getting your Friday night pre-game going on at home, be sure to tune into this week’s edition of Local Motives on WMPG on 90.9/104.1 FM or even stream it online at wmpg.org right around 7:30 as the fellas of Caro Khan bring their smart, alternative hip-hop sounds to the airwaves. This local act will lay down some rhymes and talk a bit of musical shop with host Josh Lovejoy, so tune in and turn it up if you’re kickin’ it near a radio or a computer this evening.

Okbari Middle Eastern Ensemble will be entertaining the patrons of Blue on Congress Street in Portland with an evening of music from the Middle East and Turkey starting right around 8 o’clock. This local act performs on such unique and beautiful instruments as oud (fretless Middle Eastern lute), qanun (72-stringed Middle Eastern micro-tonal zither), nay (ancient Middle Eastern reed flute), and Middle Eastern percussion. This show is free and guaranteed to expand your musical horizon, so be sure to check it out if you’re downtown this First Friday evening.

The State Theatre in Portland welcomes indie-pop artist Ingrid Michaelson and her band to the stage tonight. Anticipate lots of good times and good tunes during tonight’s performance, and be sure to keep your eyes peeled for Mainer Billy Libby playing some guitar for Michaelson as he’s been a regular member of her backing band. Things get underway with an opening set from modern folk act Neulore right around 8 o’clock.

Slaid Cleaves returns home to Maine for a performance at Portland’s One Longfellow Square this Friday evening. Cleaves is well-known for spinning stories with a novelist’s eye and a poet’s heart throughout his original Americana and folk songs. Don’t miss this special evening of music which gets underway around 8 o’clock.

The Brunswick in Old Orchard Beach is geared up for another eventful Friday featuring dance pop cover act Tickle. It’s been a hot minute since I’ve been able to check out a Paranoid Social Club show around town so I’m excited to make my way down to Empire on Congress Street this evening to check out this veteran act’s inimitable and energetic set of original rock jams. Things get underway at 9:30 with an opening set of psychedelic original rockers courtesy of Portland’s own Jeff Beam.
