Kick back and enjoy some free music in Monument Square with ShaShaSha & The Other Bones at Alive at 5

I’m not sure about you guys, but I pretty much made Wednesday bow down before me and understand that no matter how hard it tried to smack me around, I wouldn’t let it. I’m feeling so good about that fact that I’m thinking about carrying that theme straight on into today and kicking off the weekend a day early just because I can. There’s lots of Thursdaying to be done, so let’s do it to it!

Ah yes! I know exactly where I will be headed as soon as 5 o’clock hits this afternoon – straight down to Monument Square in Portland for this week’s installment of Alive at Five! This week two of my favorite local bands will be taking to the stage to rock it out at this free event. This evening electro-soul-rock act The Other Bones will be getting down alongside psych-pop-rockers ShaShaSha for a night of free and fun tuneage. Come through and we can exchange high fives as well as awkward dance moves!

The fellas of North of Nashville will be rocking down at Brian Boru in the Old Port starting right around 5 and they won’t stop the party until last call – seriously. That’s a lot of pickin’! Jay and Andrew bring their love all of all things twang to life this evening with a free show upstairs that’s always a ton of fun, so swing through and check it out at some point this evening.

The Bands on the Boardwalk series continues this evening in downtown Westbrook as New England Songwriting Contest winner Heather Peirson plays some songs in the park starting at 5:30 tonight. Heather is known as a multi-genre performer covering everything from New Orleans jazz to poignant folk narratives, blues and everything in between. It should be a fun night for a free show, so check it out if you’re in the area this evening.

If you’re kicking up in the Cornish area this evening be sure to swing by Krista’s where local acoustic duo Uke n’ Smile will be doing their thing starting right around 7 o’clock. David and Keith will be playing some acoustic jams to get your night started out on the right foot. It’s a free gig, there’s terrific food, and delicious drinks, so really a win all around if you think about it.

Bayside Bowl has some quality indie rock cued up for your Thursday evening as they welcome Cantilever, Adelyn Rose and Cult & Leper to the stage for a night of tunes. The fun gets underway right around 7 o’clock.

The Oak & The Ax in Biddeford debuts its first open mic night this Thursday. Starting at 7, they welcome you to bring your guitar, jokes, and soapbox to the stage for a night of free fun.

A pretty neat open mic night will be happening at the Meg Perry Center on Congress Street in Portland as they invite any and all musicians to come in and play during their Turnstyle Thursdays. This event is open to one and all, so show off your skills starting at 7.

Down at The Frog and Turtle in Westbrook The Waiters will be serving up some quality tunes for your Thursday evening. (See what I did there? ‘Serving up’? I’m insanely talented and clever.) This fun function band will be playing all your favorite tunes starting at 7.

SPACE Gallery on Congress Street in Portland welcomes you to come in and check out Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me, a feature-length documentary about legendary Memphis band Big Star, who never achieved mainstream success, but became critically acclaimed for their three records that become hugely influential on alternative music artists such as REM, The Replacements, The Flaming Lips and many, many more. Tonight’s film begins promptly at 7:30.

A stellar musical event is happening over at Gingko Blue on Fore Street in the Old Port. Tonight the ever-talented Megan Jo Wilson teams up with a trio of talented fellas for an evening of unique interpretations of great jazz standards as the Birdland Jazz Quartet. Music begins at 8 o’clock and rolls right on through to the 9 o’clock hour.

Steve Jones and friends will be playing some tasty Thursday night tuneage up at The Liberal Cup in Hallowell. Jones blends everything from rockabilly, country, old-time rock and roll and more to create some especially well crafted tunes that’ll be sure to make your earholes happy. If you’re in the area this evening make sure you swing by, as the show starts right around 7 o’clock.

Things are going to get loud, heavy and awesome over at Geno’s Rock Club in Portland tonight as they welcome three very awesome bands to the stage starting right around 9. Rhode Island’s doom metal band Pilgrim will perform alongside Canada’s Cauchemar and Portland’s very own Hessian for a night of skull crushing, metal mayhem.

Eyenine continues the celebration of his latest released Dissembler with an epic show down at The Dover Brickhouse in Dover, NH tonight. This evening’s show will feature performances not only by eyenine, but by Seth On Gray Street, A Minor Revolution, and Ill By Instinct as well. DJ Myth and El Shupacabra will keep the beats bumping as things get underway right around 9 o’clock.

Local blues men Samuel James and Dana Gross team up to bring you a night of tunes over at Blue on Congress Street in Portland. Starting at 9 these talented dudes will be singing some tunes and plucking some guitar strings to help you thoroughly enjoy your Thursday evening, so check it out.

Swing on by and shake those hips this Thirstday evening at this absolutely free dance party.

It’s time gear up for some stellar thirsty Thursday jams down at The Big Easy on Market Street in Portland where Band Beyond Description will be doing their thing all night long. Far more than just your typical Dead Head band, these dudes jam out on everything from The Band, Phish, The Allman Brothers and many more. Tonight except a healthy heaping of good tunes, good times, good people and maybe even a hula hoop or two. The party starts right around 9, so go on and get your noodle on.

Get down to Gritty’s in Portland to check out the fellas in Vinyl Tap as they cover everything from Huey Lewis, Elton John, The Beatles and many, many more. If you’re looking for a non-stop dance party, then swing through as they start playing at 9 and there’s never, ever a cover charge.

Across the street at at Bull Feeney’s in the Old Port, the dudes of Hello Newman are ready to pump out the jams with another free night of tunes. Starting at 9:30, these guys will be rockin’ all of your favorite 90s tunes. There’s never a cover, so check it out if you’re feeling a little nostalgic this evening.

Shake your groove thing at DJ Silverchild’s Hang The DJ dance party featuring the best 80s and 90s alternative dance jams around. Beginning at 10, get ready to bust some bad ass moves all over the Slainte dance floor.
