Florence and the Machine takes on Lana Del Rey during this week’s Clash at Empire

Happy Hump Day, you guys! We’re half-way through another fun-filled week and once we hurdle this hump we’ll be bound for the freakin’ weekend. Celebrate this astounding accomplishment by checking out the tons of midweek happenings going on all around town and beyond this Wednesday.

If you’re anywhere near the Orono area this Wednesday evening, be sure to check out a free show happening at UMaine’s Memorial Union starting right around 5 o’clock. Portland’s own pop-rocker Spencer Albee and his band will be bringing the good times and good tunes to the stage alongside special guests, The Skastitutes and funk-rock jam band Fools Rule.

Local guitarist, singer, and songwriter, Dave Jacquet will be back to host another free open mic at Cole Farms in Gray this evening. Starting right around 7:30 all artists are welcome to join in on the creative fun with Dave and a few of his friends as they gather on stage to share songs and stories all night long.

MJ’s Wine Bar presents another installment of their Ladies in Red music series tonight as local siren Kristina Kentigian is joined by Kyle Friday on keys for an evening of jazz, soul and lounge tunes as well as some reinvented original material. Tonight’s free event gets swinging right around 8pm.

A rad punk rock n’ roll show will be taking over Mathew’s on Free Street in Portland this Wednesday as the Mad Gingers, Cloud Gavin, The Skummymen and The Bed Bugs get things cranking right around 8 o’clock.

Local organ-based trio Micromasse will be playing live in the lounge at  Frontier in Brunswick as part of the venue’s free Wednesday night music series. Check out the melodic and mesmerizing sounds of Chris Sweet, Max Cantlin and Pete Dugas as the three combine guitar, drums and organ to pump out some superior instrumental jams starting at 8.

Check out the down home, acoustic roots tunes of David Beam and the Custom House Gang as the musical bunch returns to the stage of Andy’s Old Port Pub on Commercial Street in the Old Port this Wednesday. These talented fellas will be playing some great music for your midweek wind down starting at 8 o’clock.

The Frog and Turtle on Main Street in Westbrook welcomes back local blues man Ron Gill for another blues-based open mic night. Ron will be joined by local musicians Ryan Halliburton and Eric Lawson during this free event that’s open to any and all artists who are looking to showcase their musical material live on stage. Things get underway right around 8 o’clock so stop in if you’re in the area this Wednesday.

Bull Feeney’s on Fore Street welcomes back the Squid Jiggers this Wednesday as the duo performs their own brand of folk-infused drinking tunes starting at 8. There’s never a cover charge, so make some moves and check these fellas out if you’re kicking around the Old Port this Wednesday evening.

It kinda feels like it’s been a hot minute since local hip-hop heavy J.J. King has been on stage to spit fire into a microphone, but lucky for all of us he’s back on the scene tonight to make this Wednesday a bit more interesting. J.J. will be laying it down at The Asylum in Portland alongside the always articulate local emcee, eyenine as the duo showcase their material during this week’s Rap Night. As always, your hosts ill by instinct and El Shupacabra will keep things popping with early and late night open mic cyphers as things get underway right around 9 o’clock tonight.

Check out a free show at Champions in Biddeford tonight as roots rocker Travis James Humphrey plays a solo set of tunes starting right around 9pm.

Two badass broads will be killing it on stage with the help of their talented backing bands at Empire in Portland tonight for this week’s Clash of the Titans. Don’t miss out as Renee Spookydawn Coolbrith transforms in to the dark, love-spell yelling, mamma mystic Florence of Florence and The Machine to take on Mirabai Iwanko as America’s saddest girl alive, Lana Del Rey. This battle of indie pop princesses gets underway upstairs right around 9:30pm.
