Doubting Gravity rocks Brian Boru in the Old Port tonight

Written by: Holly Nunan

Finally! Thursday has arrived! I enjoy Thursdays even though I go to bed at dusk to wake up at the butt crack of dawn to be on the TV, but I do know that Thursdays are wonderful because you can go out in your Party Parts, consume as many vodka sodas as you want, and still be entirely okay with the fact that you have to work in the morning, you know why? Because the day following Thursday, my sweet, beautiful babies, is Friday! Go on ahead with your bad self and  get this weekend started a day early with tonight’s Thursday night throw down!

Holler-folk favorites, The Ghost of Paul Revere will be sailing the high seas of Boothbay Harbor as part of the Boothbay Harbor Music Cruises this Thursday evening. Starting at 6, climb aboard and enjoy some soaring harmonies, searing stringed instruments, high-energy harmonica, and boot stompin’ that make these whiskey drinking wolf boys’ live performance a thing of legend.

Lyle Divinsky is still kicking it in Portland for a couple more weeks until he returns to his home-away-from-away in Brooklyn, so whatever you do, do not miss out on your chance to catch a free show from this soul singing son of a gun as he performs live at The Porthole on Commercial Street starting right around 6 o’clock.

Local jazz act Standard Issue will celebrating the fact that we’ve almost made our way to the freakin’ weekend with a free performance at Westbrook’s Frog and Turtle on Main Street this Thursday evening. Starting at 7 take in some classic tunes from the Great American Songbook all while enjoying some delicious food and beverages at this free, all ages show.

Kick your heels down at Andy’s Old Port Pub on Commercial Street in downtown Portland with the Blasted Knoll String Band who will be performing their original blend of acoustic bluegrass and Americana during tonight’s free show, which gets underway at 7 o’clock.

Blue on Congress Street in Portland will be bustling with lots of bustling bluegrass this evening as they welcome contemporary bluegrass act Cumberland Crossing to the stage for a set of songs starting at 7. Directly following their set, all are welcome to participate in a bluegrass jam session, that’s slated to get underway right around 8:30.

It’s Thursday so why not treat yo’self to some delicious Sicilian style street food (mmm, pizzaaa…) out on the Slab patio while taking in some live music courtesy of Monarck Lisa, the restaurant & bar’s full-tilt rage house band that features horns, keys,  a full rhythm section and the talented Clara Junken on lead vocals. The party starts at 7, so if you’re hungry and looking for some free and awesome to do, check this out!

Adult-contemporary folk rocker Don Campbell and his band will be performing live up at the Deertrees Theatre in Harrison, Maine this Thursday evening. Enjoy some wonderful tunes as tonight’s event gets started at 7 o’clock.

Apologies for sounding like a broken record, but seriously, get outside and enjoy some tunes while you can because even though there’s still a couple weeks left of August, they’re gonna fly by and it’ll be sweater weather before you know it! That being said check out the Friends of Eastern Prom Summer Concert Series event at Fort Sumner Park in Portland this evening featuring local rockers Tilden Katz. Starting at 7, take in some fun, free music at this all ages event.

Get ready for some song-singin’, guitar-slingin’ and foot-stompin’ down at One Longfellow Square in Portland as local blues man and troubadour Samuel James prepares to play his last solo set of the year alongside special guest and roots rocker James Keyes. The good times start rollin’ right around 8 o’clock this Thursday evenin’.

If you are way the heck up north tonight and find yourself in the beautiful country of Madawaska, be sure to make your way down to Main Street for Party Du Main Street featuring Brise Culotte. The ensemble boasts the likes of fine County gents John Clavette, Ryan Cyr, Dominic Lavoie and Nate Cyr playing original music with some classic covers thrown in. Hosted by the County Connection, this event gets underway right around 8 o’clock.

Local duo Tombstone PD will be holding it down at the Dogfish Bar & Grille in Portland this Thursday evening with their mix of old and new rock, cover tunes, and original jams. Tonight’s free show gets started at 8 o’clock.

Local pop-rockers, Sparks The Rescue will be doing their thing out on the Pier Patio Pub in Old Orchard Beach tonight as they perform a free show filled with fun cover tunes and awesome original jams. Get the party started right around 9.

Andi Fawcett and the fellas of Doubting Gravity will be bringing you some of the best original pop rock around as they play a free show upstairs at Brian Boru in the Old Port tonight. Starting at 9 fill your Thirsty Thursday party with some good times and good tunes at this free, 21+ dance party!

If you’re looking to rock it out this Thursday be sure to check out tonight’s show at Flask Lounge in Portland with The Never Nudes, Ready Steady Torpedo and The Caught Flies. Things get cranking right around 9 o’clock tonight.

Check out another installment of local hip-hop troupe Immense Porpoise’s Making Waves event upstairs at the Empire on Congress Street in Portland tonight. Things get started right around 9:30 and will feature showcases from not only Immense Porpoise, but also Crime Wave, and Smokeye and a special BBoy performance from the Rockalot Knights

Roots, Rhythm & Dub return to the Oasis patio in the Old Port for their regular Thursday night gig featuring some high-energy reggae and dub to help super charge your Thursday night. This patio party is free and gets underway at 9:30.

Get down on it with some of the best alt-rock tunes the 90s had to offer with local cover act Hello Newman. These fellas will be throwing one helluva (free) party upstairs at Bull Feeney’s in the Old Port as they recreate tunes from such acts as Sublime, Blink 182, the GinBlossoms, Everclear, No Doubt and even Chumbawumba (yes, I just said Chumbawumba) starting at 9:30.

Vinyl Tap will be getting up to get down this evening over at Gritty’s on Fore Street in the Old Port with their decidedly danceable cover tunes that range from Cee Lo, Huey Lewis, The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Elton John, The Band and more. There’s never a cover charge and plenty of beer, so check it out starting at 10 o’clock.
