Celebrate Mardi Gras with some of Portland's funkiest players at Brian Boru tonight

Why not celebrate the fact that another Monday has come and gone by getting out this evening and acting completely irresponsible on a school night? I mean, it sounds like a pretty solid idea to me. There are a handful of awesome shindigs to attend this Tuesday so get out there and enjoy ‘em all!

Blue on Congress Street in Portland welcomes local bluegrass act Mountain Emergency to their stage for an early show filled with toe-tapping tunes and tons of fun. Mountain Emergency starts playing right around 7 and will be followed by an open acoustic jam, which is welcome to any and all musicians, that starts up at 8:30.

Get down to The Thirsty Pig on Exchange Street in the Old Port for another edition of their weekly open mic appropriately named, The Exchange. Tonight’s event is open to any and all musicians who are hoping to showcase, workshop and even collaborate on their own original tunes in front of an audience. All genres, ages and musical abilities are welcome to join in this evening, so swing through and check things out as things get started up around 7 tonight.

Folk/pop singer-songwriter Brett Dennen makes a stop in P-town this evening for a live show at The State Theatre. The Northern California artist will be joined by special guest Foy Vance, who has toured with the likes of Ed Sheeran. Get ready for a night of songs and stories from these two talented fellas as things get underway around 8.

Salvage BBQ on Congress Street in Portland invites one and all to to come and warm up with some Cajun tunes as they welcome Acadian Aces to play some music starting at 8. The Aces will be serving up classic Cajun/Acadian music for your Tuesday evening listening pleasure.

Some of Portland’s finest funk, soul, blues and R&B players come together to celebrate the last night of Carnival before everyone gives up all the good stuff for Lent. It’s Mardi Gras and tonight you can celebrate in style with a costume ball down at RiRa in Portland. The Fat Tuesdays, which features members of Model Airplane, The Kenya Hall Band, Micromasse, The Fogcutters and more, will be backing up such cats as Lex Jones, Kenya Hall, and Frank Hopkins as they bring the funk and soul to your Fat Tuesday night revelries. Grab your finest beads and party down New Orleans style as things get crankin’ right around 9!

And if you’re looking to take some time out this Tuesday and kick it with some experimental jazz then make your way over to Local 188 on Congress Street where the Jaw Gems will be doing their thing starting right around 10pm.
