Six-Moon Journey: Finally, Delaware Water Gap!

Written by: Carey Kish

July 7, 2015: Wind Gap to Delaware Water Gap, 15.6 miles, 8:45am to 3pm.

Fat Man Walking was right on time and so were Walking Home and Freebyrd. We got onto the trail in good time and made tracked for DWG. Nice day, good walking. Enjoyed early lunch and a water refill from the hand pump at Kirkridge Shelter. Good crowd of other thru’s there. Lots of great banter.

Over the high point on Mt. Minsi, then finally the long awaited descent into the gap. Views opened up along the gorge of the Delaware River to Mt. Tammany. Beautiful! My friend Becky from Maine was in the area; she texted me for my location, and soon enough there she was at one of the last viewpoints on the descent into town. Yeah!

The boys checked into the Church of the Mountains Hostel, which hadn’t changed at all in 38 years. Picked up my mail at the PO next door, then we headed down the main drag to Sycamore Grill for a few celebratory frosties.

Good crowd of hikers at the bar. We had a hoot! Between beers I walked down to Edge of the Woods Outfitters to buy fuel and pick up the replacement parts for my trekking poles. Walk in the door and there is Janet Bacchetta, my brother’s wife’s sister. I’m staying the night with Janet and her husband Vincent in New Jersey, but wasn’t going to call until I’d gotten all my errands done. What a nice surprise!

Back to the bar, we finished up, had a few more good laughs, and off Janet whisked my to NJ for a day off…
