The November 1-2 weekend snowstorm pretty much put a period on fall and catapulted us Mainers into full-on winter, with widespread power outages, heavy snow shoveling, slick roads and all that good stuff.
Bring it on, I say, Old Man Winter. Dump some more of the white stuff in the mountains and let’s get on with the ski season!
If the recent snow didn’t already have you in the mood for the winter recreation season ahead, well, the Boston Ski & Snowboard Expo will surely get you there. The 32nd annual extravaganza is a monstrous 4-day event starting on Thursday, November 13 and going right through Sunday, November 16, all staged at the Seaport World Trade Center in beautiful downtown Boston.
It’s really just a big party centered around snow sports and a great way to find out about everything fun and exciting that’s going on this winter around New England and in many other parts of the U.S. Plus there are always tons of great deals on skiing and lodging and whatnot and lots of terrific giveaways.
C’mon down to Beantown for a day and check it out; it’s a good time. And while you’re here you can see a little of the city and maybe grab a pint at one of Boston’s famous pubs and a delicious meal at any of the countless fine eating places. Make it an easy trip by leaving your car in Portland and taking the Amtrak Downeaster train to North Station or the Concord Coach bus right to South Station.
Admission to the Boston Ski & Snowboard Expo is $15 at the door, but if you go online you can get a coupon for $3 off. Do it, and use the difference for a brewski at the show. Your paid admission also gets you a free subscription to Skiing magazine and a $10 Liftopia gift card.
If you’re in the market for new gear, the show is a great place to save a bundle, up to 70% off on a huge selection of ski and snowboard equipment, clothing and accessories.
Visit the many dozens of ski resort booths throughout the expo for some wild deals of lift tickets, season passes, and ski vacation packages, for not only New England areas and resorts, but around the country.
There’s lots of free stuff too, like bumper stickers, posters signed by Olympic stars, hourly drawings, and prize wheels featuring giveaways all over the crazy busy expo.
And, of course, there’ll be a beer garden and food court with lots of good eats, plus some special foodie sample tastings.
Live entertainment and interactive exhibit will fill the expo, with acts by popular regional musical groups, plus plenty of games and participation activities geared for kids.
Some of the big names in snow sports will be hanging out at the Boston Ski & Snowboard Expo, including renowned free skier Glen Plake, Olympic gold medalists Tommy Moe and Donna Weinbrecht, 2014 Paralympian’s Mike Shea and Nicole Roundy, and a few other top world freeskiers and other past Olympic and World Cup stars who will be on hand for autographs and photos.
Some of the other highlights of the expo this year include a salute U.S. Paralympians past and present, uniquely skilled athletes who will offer up personal highlights of their careers and give presentations on their adaptive equipment and personal stories for a real hands-on look at what it takes to excel in their specialized events. There’ll be a Vertical Runway Fashion Spectacular, with regularly scheduled stage shows of the latest in ski and snowboard fashions and accessories.
The Nordic Village Learning Center will feature simulations of cross-country, snowshoeing and ski jumping for a hands-on indoor learning experience, with instruction by top athletes and expert teaching pros. And you’ll see the return of the Skyriders, a spectacularly choreographed aerial show featuring skiers and boarders in an original high-flying acrobatic trampoline show full of visual and audio thrills.
Finally, Slackline, one of the hottest competitive and training apparatus’ on the planet, will be there with a new pro-level competitive event featuring serious athletic feats that’s always a huge crowd pleaser with great video ops.
Hope to see you in the big crowd in Boston. Yeah!
