I was lucky enough to be invited to the big Coffee By Design party Sunday night, where 400 guests drank cocktails and coffee (of course), danced to Latin music, got henna tattoos and watched trapeze artists dangling from the warehouse ceiling.
This was one of the best parties of its kind that I’ve been to in Portland. It was fun, creative and, well, it had trapeze artists for goodness sakes!
The festivities celebrated the mid-January opening of Coffee By Design’s new roastery, warehouse and training building on Diamond Street in East Bayside. Here’s what our sneak peek of this beautiful new facility was like.
When you walked in the door, the first thing you saw was the new coffee bar. There are a few small tables available there as well as the bar seating:
There were baristas on hand serving coffee, of course, and as the night went on the bar got more crowded.:
Behind the bar, guests could get a free henna tattoo:
The new facility has a brand spankin’ new coffee cupping room where CBD will hold regular cupping sessions and other educational classes for the public. What’s coffee cupping? Check out this column I wrote after attending a class at the facility on India Street. It’s interesting and a lot of fun, so take advantage of it when they start offering classes on Diamond Street next year.
Most of the party action took place in the warehouse. The first thing you see when you walk in are the big roasters:
Each guest received two cocktail tickets, so there was a long line at the booze table:
The space was decorated for the holidays….
….and, amongst all the bags of coffee beans and bottles of coffee syrups, there were food tables serving fare such as veggie pad Thai and cupcakes:
Primo Cubano provided the music…
…and a guy on stilts danced to it.
Then, suddenly, there was this. Pardon my excessive photo taking, but this woman was fun to watch.
BUT WAIT! THERE’S MORE!
As they left, each guest was handed a gift bag:
The bags contained… what else?
