Because we Mainers are constantly surrounded by all the awesomeness our state has to offer it’s easy to forget about some of the fun, cool, touristy things that get visitors jazzed about a stay here. Many of those things have to do with the beauty of Casco Bay. But looking out at the water from a dock along Portland’s Commercial Street doesn’t really cut it. Boarding an authentic wooden schooner does.

Portland Paddle offers kayak and paddleboard lessons, tours, and rentals to locals and visitors (East Enders get a discount!), giving the folks who live on the peninsula a long-overdue opportunity to push off from the beach and paddle around in their own backyard. A few weeks ago, on an overcast morning that hinted of rain (much like most of our days lately), I took a tour. Even better, I took pictures:
