SLAM THE CAROLS

SLAM THE CAROLS
December 20, 2012

“God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen.” Or maybe, “give it a rest, ye gentlemen.” Sure, some holiday carols are classics. But can’t someone come up with something a little more relevant to today’s Christmas climate? The Portland Carol Slam can. Would-be carol composers write their own holiday songs and the audience choose a new holiday favorite.

Fair or Foul: Sitting on Santa’s lap

Fair or Foul: Sitting on Santa’s lap
December 18, 2012

Every kid loves Santa. Except when those kids are confronted with Santa. All the patience and jovial belly-jiggling in the world won’t stop many kids from completely freaking out on Santa’s lap. BAH, HUMBUG!

BAH, HUMBUG!

It’s easy for some of us to get into the Christmas spirit. For others, it takes a visit from a deceased friend draped in chains. It’s the most wonderful time of the year – or at least that’s what Andy Williams tells me. It’s on view right now until January 18, 2013.

Standup paddleboarders will take to the water in full Santa regalia – the red suits, the beards, the personal floatation devices – for a tour along South Portland’s waterfront. And maybe a pitstop for eggnog.

BE MERRY, SHOP LIKE MAD

BE MERRY, SHOP LIKE MAD
December 10, 2012

Holiday shopping can be harrowing. But it’s not like local boutiques are going to stay open late just for your convenience. Shop owners won’t fill up a wine glass with a complimentary refreshment for your browsing pleasure or offer you tapas while you rummage the sale rack. Except they will. It’s Merry Madness time.
