I have to admit that when I learned that not one but TWO of our cocktails, the “Basil Fawlty” and the “Dawn of the Dead,” were gin-based concoctions, I was concerned. But both of them were spectacularly balanced and refreshing.

Bartenders Guy Streitburger and Patrick McDonald stand behind the counter of Gingko Blue’s long bar, polishing the shakers and spoons they’ll use to mix up the Prohibition and Literary-style creations that form the foundation of their rather large specialty cocktail menu. They are incredibly friendly, clearly skilled, and don’t take too seriously the admittedly serious business of crafting perfect cocktails.

I’m happy to say that us five judges finally…after much tasting and hemming and hawing and re-tasting and re-tasting…agreed on a winner, and Sonny’s bar manager, Christina Klein, is now officially entitled to be pretty darned proud of her “Entendre” cocktail.

On Sunday night the conclusion of Maine Restaurant Week will be upon us, and as in years past, it will be marked by the 2013 Signature Event Cocktail and Dessert Competition. Tickets to the event are sold out, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a say in whose Double Cross Vodka cocktail will reign supreme.
