The sweet, delicious breakfast dish we know and love as French toast did not originate in France. Food historians place its origins in medieval Europe; like many an iconic dish, it was created out of necessity and thrift. In its simplest form today, it’s scented with vanilla and cinnamon, but all kinds of permutations are possible, especially when local chefs are looking to wow brunch customers.
