Watch women wrestle: Superhero Lady Armwrestlers
Superhero Lady Armwrestlers of Portland
7 pm Saturday, May 4, $7, Superher0 Lady Armwrestlers of Portland on Facebook
There’s a brawl about to break out at Mayo Street Arts.
This ain’t no schoolyard scuffle – unless your schoolyard was full of strong-armed women with names like Voom Voom Valhalla, Sally Slam, Black Mamba, and Lumberjack Sally.
The fight is an organized one. And competitors will duel without weapons – unless you consider a rock-solid bicep a weapon. I know I do.
It’s the third Superhero Lady Armwrestlers of Portland event – also known as SLAP. The event pits lady wrestlers against each other in one-on-one matchups, until an ultimate champion is crowned. Duos faced off on a regulation arm wrestling table, and judges (in striped shirts and really, really short shorts) made sure elbows stay down and both feet remain planted.
Wrestlers adopt larger-than-life personas, arriving with entourages and a theme song. It’s all wonderfully dramatic and aggressive.
And despite all the posturing and smack talking, SLAP is a do-gooder event at its core. The $7 admission (which includes “Slap Bucks” to bet on your favorite wrestler) goes to support a great local organization: A Company of Girls. So shoving a few more dollars into the buckets isn’t a bad idea.
Doors open at 7 pm and yes, Mayo Street has a cash bar. Live music by Zombie Beach.

Since she arrived in Maine from the Midwest seven years ago, it’s been her mission to experience it all firsthand – from the cardboard boat races to the paddleboard jousting tournaments. With any luck, she’ll persuade you to try it, too.// From Twitter
