Toys of Christmases past: 40 toys you never forgot (or maybe you did)
All photos from the Portland Press Herald archives
Maybe it was a tub of Tinkertoys. Maybe it was G.I. Joe, My Little Pony, or a pair of sunglasses that doubled as a squirt gun. Many of us remember that one toy we couldn’t live without – that one Christmas gift we sought out under the tree with the same frantic enthusiasm we now save for those rare and special occasions when we remember we left a half-eaten quart of ice cream in the freezer.
This gallery of photos from the Press Herald archives spans a few decades – with highlights like Nintendo and Teddy Ruxpin. Sadly, I found no photos of a yarn-haired Cabbage Patch Kid in the mix (Sabrina, with her red hair, freckles, and hard plastic face, was “that toy” for me.) But I suppose I don’t need a photo to remember her, or how unwrapping that small cotton-filled Cabbage Patch friend made me feel on Christmas morning. That said, there are a whole host of photos in this gallery that I’d forgotten to remember. (The Giga Pet was certainly forgotten for a reason.)
