Santa likes a little paddle on occasion.
Who doesn’t?
He prefers it standing and in the company of friends. And outside, of course, in full view of perplexed onlookers. The scenery’s better out there. Besides, it’s hard to fit a standup paddleboard in the house.
Santa will get his paddle on Sunday during the 3rd annual Santa SUP cruise in Portland Harbor. Standup paddleboarders will take to the water in full Santa regalia – the red suits, the beards, the personal floatation devices. The event, put on by Rafael Adams of SoPoSUP in South Portland, is open to all paddlingboarding Santa fans.
You’ll need a paddleboard and a Santa suit – two things you may or may not need to buy, borrow, or make by hand this weekend. And you must have a PFD. Rafael recommends the traditional vest-style PDF worn under the Santa suit, an idea that offers buoyancy and a bowl-full-of-jelly effect.
Meet at the South Portland boat launch near Bug Light at 9:45 am. Launch is scheduled for 10 am, after a check to make sure conditions are paddle-friendly. The Santa SUP cruise will follow the South Portland waterfront to Casco Bay Bridge and back. There may be a stop for eggnog before returning to Bug Light.
