“A Christmas Carol”

It’s easy for some of us to get into the Christmas spirit. For others, it takes a visit from a deceased friend draped in chains. Sometimes that doesn’t even do the trick, and the Ghosts of Christmas have to start pulling out headstones. Seeing their own lonely demise has a way of turning a curmudgeon around. It worked for Ebenezer Scrooge.

Mister Scrooge, that miserly tight-wad of “A Christmas Carol” who is additionally credited with launching the catchphrase “bah humbug” into popularity, has become synonymous with ungenerosity. And also redemption.

His story is a holiday classic – a transformation of the greedy into the giving. And that story is being told again this year at Portland Stage Company, Portland.

The performance stays true to Charles Dickens’ original book, “allowing audiences to hear the richness of his language, and to experience the story of Scrooge’s encounters with the spirits of past, present, and yet-to-come in the way that the author intended.”

Performances run through Dec 23: 7 pm Tue-Sat, 12 pm & 5 pm Sun. Tickets are $44, $40 for seniors, $15 for children.
