14 gorgeous photos of Maine lighthouses (in honor of National Lighthouse Day)

And you thought it was just an average Wednesday. Not so! August 7 was National Lighthouse Day. But we don’t need a special day to appreciate Maine’s bold beacons of safety, we can appreciate them every day. For starters, you could go to one of Maine’s many lighthouses and recite Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem The Lighthouse, perhaps accompanied by a trio of violinists or a children’s choir (the children are cheaper but the violists are less likely to use the lighthouse as a jungle gym). Or, you know, take a quite moment of lighthouse appreciation…[quietly appreciating now]…and gawk at some gorgeous lighthouse photos! Go ahead, they like it:
