Shop for a Cause in Portland Dec 1

Local businesses support Shop For A Cause Day in Downtown Portland

PORTLAND, MAINE – Shop For A Cause Day is part of Portland’s Downtown District’s (PDD) month-long celebration, Light Up Your Holidays, and is a unique way for Old Port and Arts District businesses to give back to the community.

This year, participating stores and galleries will donate a portion of sales on Saturday, December 1 to Junior Achievement of Maine.

Junior Achievement (JA) of Maine is a statewide non-profit organization dedicated to educating students in grades K-12 about entrepreneurship, work readiness, and financial literacy through experiential, hands-on programs in the classroom and in the workplace. In partnership with businesses, educators and volunteers, JA brings the real world to Maine students, opening their minds to their potential and preparing them for the world of work.  In the 2011-2012 academic year, Junior Achievement of Maine reached over 9,100 students from Aroostook County to York County and, it is their goal to reach close to 10,000 students this academic year.

“We are extremely grateful to be the beneficiary of Shop for a Cause Day in Downtown Portland. Funds raised through this event will play an important part in helping Junior Achievement reach as many students as possible in the coming school year,” said Junior Achievement of Maine President, Michael Stone.

The Shop For A Cause Day event has supported numerous local charities throughout the past years, most recently raising over $7,000 for The Center for Grieving Children and the Portland Police Cadet Program last year.

“PDD is proud to be part of downtown’s annual tradition to give back to the community during the holiday season,” said Janis Beitzer, PDD’s Executive Director.
