⇢ If Toroso's food pleases, 'tis the seasoning; if it doesn't, ditto

In a dining room painted in muted blues and grays, with high-backed, tufted booths, Toroso is serving its own distinctive take on Spanish tapas. Executive chef/proprietor Shannon Bard’s experiences working in San Sebastian and Seville both inform her menu, which features adventuresome flavors and a willingness to venture beyond the borders of the Iberian peninsula when necessary. To a great extent, her approach works well, especially in standout dishes like umami-rich lamb albondigas, and tender, plancha-seared asparagus spears with grated cured egg yolk to add a luxurious, savory character. Seasoning issues (both too much and too little, depending on the dish) pop up from time to time and drag down otherwise promising dishes, like ras el hanout-spiced cauliflower. Regardless of what you eat, don’t miss the restaurant’s by-the-glass selection of mostly Spanish wines – Toroso pours nearly 30 of them, thanks to a vacuum-sealed dispensing system. After all, what are tapas, if not a perfect excuse to nibble on something while you drink another glass of wine?
