// AT A GLANCE
The tiny Tiqa Cafe, which sits on the edge of State Street in Deering Oaks Park, is not a place for claustrophobics. So, it’s nice that there’s a large patio with umbrella-covered seating where people can breathe in fresh air and enjoy a little elbow room. Having said that, a trip inside the little restaurant that looks like a castle is a must, not only because that’s where you have to order your food, but that’s also where you marvel at what they’ve done with the tiny space. Nestled into one corner, embraced by the turret with stained-glass windows, is a large round table with six chairs. The furniture is identical to the seating found in Tiqa, the pan-Mediterranean restaurant on Commercial Street that runs the cafe. On the other side of the cafe are three or four smaller tables for two. In between the seating areas is the counter where you order and pick up your food. Sitting on the counter are urns filled with housemade teas to complement the two coolers of drinks and a small selection of baked goods, including cinnamon babka, croissants and lemon bars. Housemade breads are also sold here. The cafe offers a small selection of simple foods with a Mediterranean twist. Yes, there’s beef and chicken shawarma here, but also an Italian muffaletta and gazpacho from Spain. France gets the credit for the grilled cheese, which is a bargain at $5.
