⇢ A shifting menu of comforting dishes mostly shines at Sammy's Deluxe in Rockland

// AT A GLANCE
The next time you are in Rockland, it is worth your time to seek out Sammy’s Deluxe, an eclectic, casual restaurant. Chef-owner Sam Richman previously worked at technique-driven, precision operations like Jean-Georges and Gramercy Tavern, both in New York. At Sammy’s Deluxe, his goal is a bit different: to source high-quality, local ingredients and treat them well, frequently in homey, comforting dishes like matzoh ball soup with a pudding-tender poached chicken leg, or egg noodles and beef brisket, cooked over low heat for a ponderously slow 14 hours. His housemade milled bread, available a la carte for $2.50 for two half-slices, is so good, it is almost – almost – worth the highway robbery of its price tag. But one dish worth every penny at Sammy’s Deluxe is his delicata-and-sweet-potato “salad,” not so much for the gorgeously roasted winter vegetables and the innovative whey-and-garlic dressing, but for Richman’s ultra-creamy, unpasteurized ricotta. It is outstanding.
