Yarmouth’s Dirigo Public House might take its name directly from the state motto, but it wants you to know that, when it comes to brewing, there’s a whole wide world out there. Co-owner Ben Grant has built a beverage program around the idea that great craft beer can come from anywhere – as far away as Germany, and as close to home as Midcoast Maine. Featured tap beers change frequently, but if you have a chance to order a pint of either the Massachusetts Lord Hobo IPA or the Michigan Founders PC Pils, you won’t be sorry. The cider-glazed chicken wings and sweet-savory house salad with spiced almonds are both terrific starters that play well with beer. Don’t miss the eponymous burger, served with a sauce made from smoked onions and tomatoes, and be sure to order it with the onion rings, rather than the overbrowned, underseasoned French fries. Desserts are probably worth skipping, however, especially the chocolate peanut butter cake ($7) from Ice It! Bakery next door, which we found dry and tainted by off flavors, as if it had been stored too long in the walk-in refrigerator. Instead, grab the beer menu and spend your calories on a rich imperial stout; you’ll have the luxury of choosing a local or a not-so-local variety, and you won’t go wrong either way.
