⇢ Bar Guide: Bayside Bowl breeds community

⇢ Bowling alleys throw strikes and gutter balls in the cuisine game

// AT A GLANCE
If you’re like many people, you haven’t stopped to consider eating an entire meal in a bowling alley. Two local businesses are out to change that, investing time, effort and lots of money into chic, attractive spaces designed to serve you Caesar salads and pizzas, as well as rent you a pair of shoes. Portland’s Bayside Bowl, open since 2010, has used its recent renovations as an opportunity to reimagine itself as both a restaurant and a recreation venue. Its new outdoor rooftop deck is an absolute stunner, with a bar and an Airstream trailer that serves as a taco truck. Unfortunately, the food seems occasionally like an afterthought, lagging behind the standard set by the modern, often elegant spaces that make up the business. Among the better dishes are the tender cactus taco and Bayside’s vegan interpretation of a Reuben sandwich, the Rachael, made with smoky tempeh and tangy sauerkraut. Steer clear of the gloppy, oversauced tot poutine, which our server described as “unforgettable.” She’s not wrong.
