She has been obsessed with - and inspired by - music since she listened to Monkees records borrowed from the town library when she was six years old. She bought her first Rolling Stones record at a flea market when she was in 7th grade and discovered David Bowie a year later. She's a HUGE fan of the local music scene and covers it along with national musical happenings in her "Face the Music" column and with artist interviews that appear in print in the Portland Press Herald and online at Mainetoday.com. You'll also find her out and about absorbing live music like a sponge and roaming around local record shops and flea markets. Aimsel is also the host of Music from 207 on 98.9 WCLZ and appears monthly on the News Center Maine TV show “207” to talk about...music of course.

Four reasons why I love John Gorka

Written by: Aimsel Ponti

Singer-songwriter John Gorka with his incredible baritone voice and songwriting precision has been killing me for a long, long time, dating back to my years in Keene, NH during and after college. I haven’t seen him live in at least a dozen years and the wait continues because my dance card is full with Natalie Merchant on Thursday, October 23 down the street at The State Theatre.

But YOU should go see Gorka play, especially if you’re unfamiliar with him or have never seen him live.

I don’t mean to sound like the total music dork that I am, but Gorka’s music is truly something special.

The show is at 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 23. Tix are $25. Head her for all the info: onelongfellowsquare.com

Here are four of my favorite John Gorka songs.

1. “I’m From New Jersey”

2. “I Saw a Stranger With Your Hair”

3. “The One That Got Away”

4. and especially this one, about my favorite singer of all time. Here’s “Heart Upon Demand”
