Weekend to-do: Bradbury Mountain

Homemade mixed-berry pancakes topped is really the way to start any morning, but on a weekend – it gives you the energy to get out for a local hike. Top off your Stanley thermos with steaming coffee, grab the family and head for Bradbury Mountain this weekend. We hiked before the recent snow and Muck boots were fine, but perhaps snowshoes would be in order this weekend. The trails are great for all ages and the views, particularly with this fresh powder, satisfy any accomplished hiker. Finding a parking spot is never difficult here, either – which means you can get outside, get up and get down and still have time left in the day to enjoy other activities – like dinner in Freeport or a walk around L.L.Bean’s sprawling campus.

Energized from whole wheat carbs and a boat load of caffeine, we hop onto the summit trail and within the hour are overlooking the beautiful countryside. We sit down and dangle our feet from a rock overhang. It’s peaceful and quiet – a great spot to take in nature and just relax.  A small snow shower begins, inspiring us to build a miniature snowman, complete with stick arms.

On the return, I find a few pieces of abandoned firewood near a fire ring. Spark takes quickly to some white birch tinder and moments later our hands are warming fireside. I’m constantly dreaming about what’s next, so we hop into the Jeep to find another adventure…. Cheers!
