This hiker has spent a significant amount of time exploring along the Maine coast over the last two years, researching and writing about all the beautiful conservation lands, miles of trails and great hiking to be found from York County to the far reaches of Downeast. It’s been a fantastic experience for sure discovering many new places and visiting again some old friends and their winding ways.
The payoff, besides the most excellent time spent outdoors in this incredible state of ours, tramping through the mossy green coastal forests, scampering over the oceanfront rocks, gulping in the salty sweet air and catching more than just a few wicked decent sunsets, will be a new book that describes the best of these trails in these special places.
Of course, I’ve still got to put the finishing touches on the thing. Well, maybe about 10,000 words of finishing touches, but hey, who’s counting. It’s been quite a process but I’m getting there. And come next spring, AMC‘s 50 Best Day Hikes on the Maine Coast from Kittery to Eastport will be a reality in print. I hope you’ll like it, grab a copy and get on out to the Maine coast for some fantastic hiking, some of the very best on the planet.
One of the hikes you’ll find in the new book is at Petit Manan Point in the Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge in Steuben in, where else, Downeast. The Hollingsworth Trail is a wild and beautiful 2-miler that leads to a sweet spot on Pigeon Hill Bay with views to the Petit Manan Island Light.
Another nearby hike, in the Pigeon Hill Preserve just up the road from the MCINWR, did not make the cut. But not for lack of trying. It’s an awesome summit with far reaching views out over the bay of the same name, as well as Petit Manan Point and Bois Bubert Island and more. With a limit of 50 hikes for the book, well, I just had to make some tough choices. Maybe next edition when I hope to expand the guide to 60 hikes. We’ll see.
Anyway, both of these uber-scenic spots and their lovely trails are outlined in a recent article I wrote for the Maine Sunday Telegram Outdoors section, “Down East hikes are worth the trek to Steuben.” Check it out. Then make your plans to go Downeast for these and many other hikes. And believe me there are many indeed.
