Cute, quirky and handmade jewelry inspired by Steve Zissou

Thais Marchese, the designer behind the shop Sleepy Mountain, is brand new to Portland. After leaving Seattle to be closer to her family (her parents are based in Boston), she settled on Maine.  “I love the beauty Maine has to offer, like its gorgeous coast and Acadia National Park,” says Thais. “Portland was an easy choice once I decided Maine was where I was going to live.”

Thais has been making jewelry since she was a kid and started sewing as a teenager. The more she crafted, the more she loved it. She opened her first etsy shop in 2010. As far as the inspiration for her designs, Thais puts it very simply: “I’m inspired by things I love. I’m a big fan of indie films, books and of course, great television. Wes Anderson (director of The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou) is my favorite director and Breaking Bad is definitely one of my favorite TV shows. I’ve watched all seasons over about 3 times now… I may have a problem.”

Her philosophy for her business is largely the same. “I only make things that I love and would buy. I take custom requests but the things I create on my own are all inspired by things I am passionate about,” she says. “I figured, if I’m going to start my own business, I need to love what I do everyday.”

Welcome to Portland, Thais! You can check out her online shop and also check her out on Facebook. She’ll also be selling her stuff at PICNIC on August 24.
