Only good eats at Miss Portland Diner, Scratch Baking and Shaw’s. Yes, Shaw’s

With the fast pace of restaurant openings behind us for now (though look for Ebb and Flow opening later this week) this was the week that was with some worthwhile food and dining picks.

There’s a momentary breather in new restaurant openings until Ebb and Flow opens reportedly later this week. In the meantime, the week was not a total loss for good eats as shown in this short round-up of picks and absolutely no pans.

I’ve been going to the Miss Portland Diner as its new menu unfolds and I’ve included a few breakfast and lunch dishes that I enjoyed there. Wednesday is the launch of their new dinner menu, which I will report on Friday.

Halloween was lots of fun around town with good food and merriment at Empire Chinese  and Bramhall where the haut monde were out in full costume drag.

And the other day  while picking up some bagels at Scratch Baking, I couldn’t resist their double chocolate brownies—highly recommended.

And acting on a tip from a friend that the best supermarket around (no it’s not Hannaford, Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s) is none other than super-sized Shaw’s Supermarket in Westbrook at the Kohl’s shopping complex.  It’s an enormous store with lots of interesting items that you don’t see elsewhere, including their international food aisles. You won’t be transported to Harrods’s Food Halls, Fauchon or Eataly but for local provender it was pretty good.
