Home sweet home: Make and see gingerbread houses in Maine

Written by: Susan Axelrod

A diner, an Olympic ski jump (complete with crashed gingerbread jumpers), numerous churches, a windmill, the Tooth Fairy’s house and Noah’s ark: All of these and more have been made out of gingerbread — as well as candy, pretzels, cookies, ice cream cones and plenty of royal icing holding everything together — for the annual Great Gingerbread Spectacular at The Opera House at Boothbay Harbor. The bar has been raised every year, with competitors coming from as far away as Albany, New York to enter their creations.

If you jump on it, there’s still time to enter, but your completed “house” has to be delivered to The Opera House on Friday afternoon. Call 207-633-5159 for more information.

This will be the seventh year for the Spectacular, which is kicked off in style on Friday with a community dance dubbed the Dough Ball. On Saturday and Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., The Opera House will be open for the public to view the gingerbread, drink free hot cocoa and even buy one of the gingerbread houses to take home or donate to a local needy family.

Boothbay Harbor’s is a big one, but there are other gingerbread-focused events going on around the state, too.
