Since opening last April, Ebenezer’s Brew Pub in Brunswick has already been voted “19th Best Brewery in America” by Cool Material, a popular men’s shopping blog. On the same list, Allagash was voted 18th.
Owners Chris and Jen Lively aren’t strangers to high accolades. The original Ebenezer’s – a 250-seat pub in the woods of Lovell offering nearly 1,000 beers – has been named the “best beer pub in the U.S.” by Men’s Journal and the best pub in the world by BeerAdvocate.
The location at 112 Pleasant St. in Brunswick was originally the Lion’s Pride beer bar. Chris said he was ready a few years ago to make a change – he didn’t just want to offer world-renowned beers to customers, he wanted to also brew his own. Enter: Lively Brewing Co.
Lively Brewing Co.’s 10-plus beers are all brewed on premises at Ebenezer’s by Michael LaCharite, who started Casco Bay Brewing and was the original brewer at Baxter Brewing Co. There’s usually between 7 to 10 available on draft. The other 25 glass-blown taps include local and international brews, wine and mead.
Lively Brewing has already established a reputation for brewing Belgian-style beers with high alcohol quads and triples thrown in, like the Space Taxi, which is 12 percent alcohol by volume priced at $8 for 13 ounces (draft only).
Ebenezer’s offers draft beer “to-go” in 32- or 64-ounce growlers and their 16-ounce drafts range in price from $4 to $9. There’s also a full bar, several wines and cider.
While awkwardly located in a strip mall on a busy road just off the highway, Ebenezer’s upholds the “lively” in Lively Brewing Co. Monday nights kids eat free with an adult purchase from 5 to 8 p.m., Tuesday is open mic night from 7 to 10 p.m. offering a $2 shot or a $3 drink special and Wednesday is trivia or game night that starts at 7:30 p.m. and offers $3 beer specials and free appetizers for game participants.
You won’t go hungry at Ebenezer’s Brew Pub, either. The 43-year veteran chef, Sandra Arey, has created an eclectic menu that for appetizers includes brie wontons, zweibels (fried onion strings with IPA ketchup), sesame seared tuna, fried pickles, and oddly enough, Cap’n Crunch chicken tenders.
Chris is getting ready to launch a new website, where information and updates on Ebenezer’s in Brunswick, Lovell and Lively Brewing Co. will live. Until then, visit Ebenezer’s Brew Pub’s Facebook page for more information.
