5 great Christmas gifts for the Maine craft beer lover

Written by: Dave Patterson

We all have one in our lives. That craft beer lover who talks endlessly about hop resin and Brettanomyces yeast and the latest beer release where she stood in line for two hours.

If you’re fretting over what to buy the beer lover in your life, quit your fretting. We live in Maine, for goodness sakes, a state teeming with great breweries, pubs and beer stores. The possibilities are endless.

Here are five gift ideas ranging from under $10 up to $75 that will bring a smile to the beer lover in your life, while allowing you to do the right thing and buy local this Christmas season.

Leather Coozie from Maine Leather Company

This is the classiest coozie you will ever find. Hand stitched in Portland by Belle Hilmer, these coozies, simply put, are beautiful. They are made with full-grain distressed leather and feature the state of Maine outline. There are multiple sizes for cans and bottles. Purchase a coozie for $25.

“Beer Lover’s New England: Best Breweries, Brewpubs & Beer Bars,” by Norman Miller

Most of the beer lovers I know, myself included, love to read about craft beer. This striking book gives the low down on the hundreds of breweries, brewpubs and beer bars in New England. “Beer Lover’s New England” makes a great companion to a road trip. It’s also a nice coffee table book with beautiful photos. Pick up a copy at Longfellow books or your local bookstore for $22.

Proper Glassware from Local Brewery

Every beer needs to be paired with the proper glassware. Beer lovers are smitten with glassware. My suggestion is to go to your locally brewery and purchase glasses with the brewery logo emblazoned on it. A nice tulip-shaped glass will do for most beer styles, and beer enthusiasts love brewery swag. If you’re not sure which glass to buy, ask the tasting room attendant for help. Most glasses run about $15. Find a brewery close to you:

Gift Card to Maine Brewing Supply

There’s a good chance the craft beer lover in your life also brews his own beer, making a gift card from Maine Brewing Supply in Portland a great gift. Maine Brewing Supply sells Clone Brew Kits allowing homebrewers to mimic their favorite local brews. In addition, I recently wrote about their Build Your Own IPA program where homebrewers can create a recipe to make their dream IPA. A $75 gift card will cover the cost of ingredients for most recipes.

Bottle Opener from Local Brewery

Did you draw Todd in your office secret Santa? All Todd ever talks about is beer. If you’re looking for an inexpensive gift for Todd or a Todd-like individual, grab a beer opener from a local brewery. Most breweries sell slick stainless steel bottle openers with their logo at the top. This small, low-cost gift is practical and always a welcome sight to a craft beer lover. Purchase at most Maine breweries for under $10. Allagash Brewing openers:
